Proverbs 3:5-6 NIV
Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight.
Many times I’ve thought that my way was what I wanted and that was it. I didn’t care what God wanted for me. I was too afraid that I wouldn’t like what He wanted me to do. I would pray and pray for something to happen and get angry, discouraged and resentful when it didn’t come through. I couldn’t understand why I was in the situation I was in and God wasn’t doing anything to correct it for me. Didn’t He love me? Didn’t He care?
He did. And He still does.
Looking back on those situations, I have thanked Him and praised Him for not giving me what I thought I wanted because what He had planned turned out infinitely better than what I had planned. And, by letting me go through it, He taught me to trust in Him.
In our day to day living, with all the waves of life crashing around us, it’s easy to forget who He is. He is God. He has knowledge that we don’t. He sees the beginning from the end and has a perfect plan. He doesn’t need our permission to carry out His plans, but He wants our trust and obedience. He loves us and has the very best for us. He has great things for us to do for Him. He’s just waiting for us to let go and let Him work through us.
I heard a story a while back of a little girl who owned a plastic necklace that she loved. It looked like a string if pearls but was clearly a plastic dress-up toy. Each night as her daddy tucked her into bed, he would say, “Sweetie, do you love me?”
In response she would say, “Yes daddy, I love you very much.”
“Then give me your necklace.”
“No daddy, not my necklace. It’s so pretty.”
“Okay sweetie. That’s okay. I love you very much and I know you love me.” And with a kiss on the forehead, he bid his daughter goodnight.
Each night this went on, asking for her necklace. To demonstrate in a way that she loved him enough to give up her toy jewelry.
One night, the dad asked once again, “Sweetie do you love me?”
This time she held out her necklace and with a tear in her eye she replied, “I love you daddy. You can have my necklace.”
“Oh my dear daughter, I love you. Thank you for your necklace.”
Bringing out a velvet box from behind his back, one that he had carried into the room every night, he said, “Here you go sweetheart. I’ve wanted to give this to you for so long but couldn’t. Not until you were willing to give up your plastic necklace.”
Wiping the tears from her eyes and a smile forming in her face, she gently and excitedly took the box from her daddy.
She opened the lid with great anticipation, “Real pearls! Oh daddy, they’re beautiful, thank you!”
“You’re welcome sweetheart. They are yours forever. I love you.” And with a kiss on her forehead, he bid her goodnight.
God has great plans for us. He loves us dearly and wants to accomplish great things through us. But it’s not until we let go of what we are holding on to, what we are putting before Him and His plans, what we are putting before our love for Him, that He is able to give us the ‘real pearls’.
Trust in God. He loves you and wants the absolute very best for you. He’s just waiting for you to let go and trust Him.
Take courage. Step out of the boat. Follow His footsteps on the water. He will hold you up and free your soul to live for Him.
