Forgive Yourself

1 John 1:8-10 NIV
[8] If we claim to be without sin, we deceive ourselves and the truth is not in us. [9] If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness. [10] If we claim we have not sinned, we make him out to be a liar and his word is not in us.

1 John 2:1 NIV
[1] My dear children, I write this to you so that you will not sin. But if anybody does sin, we have an advocate with the Father—Jesus Christ, the Righteous One.

We are all sinners who fail God on a daily basis. He already knows this and He accepts us and loves us anyway. When we compromise and give into temptation, we haven’t done anything that surprises God. He knew it was coming. And He has already made provision for it through Jesus Christ.

When we are honest with God and ourselves, freely acknowledging our failure to live up to His holy standard, He is able to heal us. Our hope of salvation is never dependent upon our ability but on Jesus and what He has already accomplished on the cross on our behalf. So when we confess our sins in repentance and trust in Jesus for forgiveness and salvation, God heals and restores us. We also learn more about His grace and mercy as we fall into our Father’s loving arms.

God’s grace through Jesus Christ is not an opportunity to sin but it is absolutely a promise of forgiveness.

Remember that God loves you and knows your weaknesses. He knows your failures. He sees you completely from beginning to end. And He loves you! Jesus died for you knowing you would fail Him. He gave Himself for this very reason. He knew we couldn’t make it on our own so He paid the price on our behalf so we could be saved.

Next time you fail God, come to Him in humble confession and repentance and know that He loves and forgives you. Then, be sure to extend that same grace and forgiveness to yourself. God has washed away and covered your sins and promises to remember them no more. So why do you remember them? Let them go and abide in the grace and mercy of our Lord God Jesus Christ.

God bless you this day as you rest in the love and mercy of our awesome God and faithfully follow His footsteps on the water.
