Repent! For the Kingdom of Heaven Has Come Near!

Matthew 3:1-3 NIVIn those days John the Baptist came, preaching in the wilderness of Judea and saying, “Repent, for the kingdom of heaven has come near.” This is he who was spoken of through the prophet Isaiah:

“A voice of one calling in the wilderness, ‘Prepare the way for the Lord, make straight paths for him.’”

John the Baptist, a true humble servant of the most high God, was preparing the way for Jesus to begin His ministry on earth. The voice of one crying in the wilderness to prepare the way for the Lord.

The way he did this was to call everyone to repentance. They came to him confessing their sins and were baptized. But when the religious leaders show up he calls them a brood of vipers. He tells them to keep with the fruit of repentance and not rely on their religion and  traditions for their salvation.

The way prepared for Jesus was not  through rules or rituals. It wasn’t through deep theological knowledge or years of schooling. It was through a humbled and repentant heart.

We have all sinned and failed Jesus miserably. But He came to save us, not to condemn us.

In John 3:18 Jesus says this about Himself, “Whoever believes in him is not condemned, but whoever does not believe stands condemned already because they have not believed in the name of God’s one and only Son.”

Apart from Jesus, we live under condemnation already. It is only by repentance and faith in His name that we are forgiven and saved.

Our loving Lord stands before us, between us and hell, with His arms open wide saying come to me, humble yourself and repent. He willingly went to the cross and died for all our sins so we could have the hope of salvation in Him. If we go to hell, it’s because we pushed past Jesus to get there. We rejected His gift of love, forgiveness and salvation because we didn’t want to humble ourselves and submit to Him.

All sin boils down to the original temptation of Eve in the Garden of Eden. Will you humbly and obediently follow God? Or will you be your own god?

The real temptation wasn’t the fruit. It was the lie that Eve could become like God. It’s the same lie and desire that got Satan and his angels kicked out of heaven. He wanted to be God. He wanted to be like the most high.

So, what is your desire? Which path will you choose? Will you continue in sin and be ‘master and god’ of your own life which will lead to death?

Or…

Choose life by humbling yourself before the one true almighty God, repenting of your sins and living for eternity by faith in the Lord Jesus Christ?

Lord, please help us to surrender anything that is keeping us from humble submission to you today. Please guide us to bow our hearts to you, keeping with the fruit of repentance, and place our faith firmly in you as our Lord, God and Savior. Thank you for being our God and standing firmly between us and hell. Help us to remain in you Lord Jesus! In your precious name we pray, thank and praise you, Amen!
